Would the NHL be better off if it only had twenty teams and operated like soccer’s British Premiere League?
You could get rid of the five sun-belt teams that are perpetually struggling financially. Also, every year the bottom three teams would be relegated to the American Hockey League and the best three teams from the AHL would be promoted to the National Hockey League.
The NHL works fine now as long as they don’t add any new teams.
As for demoting the worst NHL teams to the AHL and promoting the best AHL teams to the NHL, that would never work for several reasons.
First of all, that would cause an incredible hassle trying to keep track of what team is in what league if it changes every year
Second: NHL arenas are set up to support a crowd of about 3 times the size of an AHL arena. this would mean that the AHL teams that were promoted wouldn’t have nearly enough seats, and the NHL teams that got demoted would have far too many seats
Third: most AHL teams are not in big cities like the NHL teams and don’t ahve the fan base of the NHL. Most AHL teams are also along the East Coast and Great Lakes regions, so the western half of the country would just be forgotten eventually in the NHL
Finally: because of AHL rules, you can only have a certain number of “veteran” players (I believe six) per game. A veteran player is someone who has played more than a certain number of games in the NHL and/or AHL (I want to say like 240?). The AHL is designed to be a developmental league for the NHL, not a long term league. If an NHL team were demoted to the AHL, they would have to fire 2/3 of their team to be able to play in the AHL.
England should just stick to soccer, and leave hockey to the good teams in the US and Canada
Well… not really Canada, since a Canadian team hasn’t won the cup in about 15ish years?
